Patricia Eileen Mahoney
Pat Mahoney, 65 of Wilmington, DE, died peacefully on Saturday, May 22, 2010, after a courageous battle with cancer. Loving family and friends surrounded her. Pat was born on April 16, 1945 in Mineola, New York and attended grade and high school at St. Mary’s College Preparatory School in Manhasset, Long Island. Pat had wit, style, passion and determination as she devoted her life and expertise to the Nursing profession as a faculty member, administrator, clinician, researcher and consultant in major east coast academic medical centers. She received her Bachelors Degree in Nursing from Georgetown University and MA in Nursing from New York University. Pat also pursued her education as a PhD candidate in nursing at NYU. Pat served as Assistant Vice President of Nursing at the Medical Center of Delaware for a number of years and later became a Nursing Home Executive Director for long term care skilled facilities and assisted living facilities in Wilmington, Delaware. She served as a resource in Nursing practice, legal and regulatory issues at the New York State Nurses Association as the Assistant Director of Nursing Practice. She was an active member of the Delaware Organization of Nurse Executives during its initial inception.
Pat was a well-respected educator and mentor for nursing students at Thomas Jefferson University and Neumann College. Her area of expertise in her early career as a nurse was in head and spinal cord injury, research, stroke and neurological special care. Between 1973 and 1983, Pat assisted in the planning and implementation of the first hospice program at New York Hospital, Cornell Medical Center. Working with the Delaware Nurses Association, she initiated and served on the board of the Ethics Committee, which later became the current Delaware End of Life Coalition.
